The impact of ESG & Sustainability on Real Estate Finance, Investment and Valuation

The Malta Bankers’ Association (MBA) and Archi+ have teamed up for the second year running to host two workshops on real estate finance and valuation that will take place over two days. Titled ‘The impact of ESG and sustainability on real estate investment, finance and valuation’, the 2024 workshop took a focused approach on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), in acknowledgement of both the timely nature of the topic and the importance of ESG considerations in real estate finance. The first workshop which was supported by Bank of Valletta p.l.c. and BNF Bank p.l.c., was held on the 28th February at the Xara Lodge, l/o Rabat while the second event scheduled for the 7th March, will be in the form of a webinar.

Building on the success of the first workshop in April 2023, this year’s workshops were designed to facilitate open conversations and collaborative efforts among real estate professionals, the banking and finance community, and the real estate investment and development sector. The objective was to help stakeholders navigate complexities and enhance investment and valuation practices through shared insights and expertise, including the seasoned perspective of the key note speaker, various presenters, panellists and leading world experts in the field.

The half-day event of the 28th was kicked off by  MBA’s Chair, Marcel Cassar, with a keynote speech which may be accessed through this link. The session proceeded through a number of presentations on “Developments in the Real Estate Sector”, “The Changing ESG Space”, “Sustainable Real Estate in Practice”, “Convincing the Bank: The Business Case for Green”, delivered respectively by Michaela Ghigo from the Central Bank of Malta, Chris Meilak from EY Malta, Anthea Huber from Archi+ and Clint Azzopardi Flores from BOV in his capacity as the Chair of the MBA’s Standing Committee on ESG, Sustainability and Economic Growth (ESEG). The workshop concluded with a panel discussion, moderated by Karol Gabarretta, the MBA’s Secretary General and which featured Perit David Xuereb, MCESD/ESG Alliance Chair, Clint Azzopardi Flores as ESEG Chair, Chris Meilak from EY Malta and Michael Warrington CEO AX Group p.l.c.

The second session, which is supported by PwC Malta, will be held online on the 7th March. It will focus on the following themes//presentations, “ESG and Climate Risk”, “Market Evolution of ESG and Value Implications” and “The role of the Valuer & ESG in Valuation” all delivered by David Marshall and Georgina Chillingworth both from JLL, while “ESG Data and the Green Transition” and “The link between Valuation & Governance”, will be delivered by Angelique Spina from PwC Malta and Justin Mizzi from Archi+ respectively.
