ALERT

The Malta Bankers’ Association has received reports from a number of individuals in Malta who are being contacted telephonically by unknown persons who are clearly attempting to trick these individuals.

The recipients of these phone calls are being told that following some Court ruling, they are entitled to receive a sum of €2,000 /€3,000 from the Malta Bankers’ Association as a refund of excessive bank charges previously levied by the banks on their customers. However, an advance payment of some €100 is being requested by the callers before such a “refund” can be effected.

The Malta Bankers’ Assocation would like to alert the general public that no such “refunds” are due, and that this is yet another attempted scam. As such, these phone calls should be ignored, and on no account should the recipients of such calls provide any personal information (bank account number, mobile phone number, etc.) to the callers.

Il-Malta Bankers’ Association irċeviet rapporti minn numru ta’ nies f’Malta li qed ikunu kkuntattjati bit-telefon minn persuni mhux magħrufa li b’mod ċar qed jippruvaw jingannawhom.

Min qed jagħmel dawn it-telefonati qed jgħid lil min qed jirċevihom li wara xi sentenza tal-Qorti, huma ntitolati biex jirċievu somma ta’ €2,000/€3,000 mill-Malta Bankers’ Association bħala ħlas lura ta’ charges eċċessivi mitluba mill-banek fil-passat.  Madankollu qed jintalab pagament bil-quddiem ta’ €100 qabel dan il-“ħlas lura” ikun jista’ jingħata.

Il-Malta Bankers’ Association tixtieq twissi lill-pubbliku li l-ebda “ħlas lura” m’għandu jingħata, u li dan hu attentat ta’ ingann.  Dawn it-telefonati għandhom ikunu njorati u ħadd m’għandu jagħti lil dawn il-persuni li qed jagħmlu t-telefonati xi tagħrif personali, bħan-numru tal-kont tal-bank, in numru tal-mobile, eċċ.

Organisation

The Malta Bankers’ Association was first established in May 1962 as a co-ordinating and lobbying body, for banks operating in Malta, on sectoral issues and policies. Membership in the Association is open to all banks which are authorised to operate in Malta.

The organisational set-up of the Association consists of:
  • The Board, which is primarily responsible for policy issues,
  • An Executive Committee,
  • A full-time Secretariat, and
  • A number of sub-committees and working groups which deal with specific business areas and issues.

The Association is also represented on a number of National Committees. These include FinanceMalta, the Payment System Users’ Group and the Joint Committee for the Prevention of Money Laundering and Funding of Terrorism.

Following Malta’s accession to the European Union in May 2004, the Association had applied for full membership of the European Banking Federation (EBF), of which it was previously an Associate Member. The EBF accepted the Association as a full member with effect from 1 July 2004.
